Creating a New Pie Chart with ThePie

Below is a pie chart of the 2010 UK General Elections. This tutorial will show how to generate such chart with ThePie.

To start a new pie, click the Clear All button at the top left, and you will see a blank pie chart with the name "New".

Then click on the Name Field to get the text keyboard and enter the name of the chart.

Then enter the Pie Total by clicking the Total Field.

Now you got a big pie, but it has no slices, all the Total is left to be used, as shown by the Left label.

To add a new slice to the pie click on the + button to bring the Slice Editor. Then enter the slice name by clicking on the Slice Name field and using the keyboard.

Then enter the Slice Value and the Percent will appear automatically.

Then choose the Slice Color. RGB colors have 3 components "Red", "Green" and "Blue". Each component has 256 levels of brightness 0 to 255, normally given as Hexadecimals "00" to "FF".

To select a color component click the component button (R, G, or B), then select the level of brightness from the table above the Color Pane containing the Color Number. Here we select "B" to access the Blue Color Component Table and "FF" to produce "Blue" (0000FF).

Now "accept" the slice by clicking the Accept button to add the first pie slice to our pie.

Now add the "Labour" and "Libdem" slices.

For Libdem, we use the Yellow color which is produced by combining Red and Green to get "FFFF00".

Now we got the 3 main parties, but there are still 19,412,860 votes left unaccounted, as is shown in the Left label.

We can use this value as a slice which we call "The Rest".

Click the green Use button to turn the leftover to a slice. Then give it the name, here "The Rest", and gray color.

To get Gray color select R, G, and B as equal values. The smaller the value the darker the color. Here we chose "3F3F3F".

Click Accept and the pie is complete.

By default the slices are sorted by value, the greatest at the top. This is shown by two circular buttons at the bottom of the pie chart "V" and "Triangle".

The slices start at Angle 0 - the rightmost point on the circle circumference (90 - bottom, 180 - left, 270 - top) and follow clockwise.

To sort by name click on the "V" button to make it "N", and to sort smallest at the top click on the "Triangle".

Now you can email the chart by clicking on the "Send" button - top right. You need to have a working and configured e-mail program on your device to be able to do it.

When you enter an new pie name in the graph screen, a new pie is saved in the database. The saved pies can be seen by clicking the Pies tab, at the bottom.

The saved pies can be loaded or deleted by clicking on the pie name and selecting the option from the menu.

The App comes with 3 sample pies pre-installed. They can be deleted, but if no pies are left, they will be loaded again. The same happens, if you click the Reset button (red at top right). It will delete all the pies and re-install the ones supplied with the app.
